Appearance

In regard to Yumi's personality, her instant trademark is how she is shown to always prefer black clothes, basically the American goth look; a black sweater which doesn't cover her belly button, black skintight jeans, and black boots. Her Season 4 outfit is like her sports clothes consisting of a dark graphite blouse and matching pants with a purple hem. She wears the same boots as in Seasons 1-3 (this being seen in Cold Sweat where when an embarrassing childhood Halloween photo of her is seen, she is wearing big black boots in the picture).

On Lyoko, she is dressed in a black and red sleeveless skirt-length kimono, red leggings, white hand-length sleeves, black thigh-length boots with white bandages wrapping her shins, a large yellow bow that ties together on her back (where she conceals her tessens), her face is powdered pure white like a geisha girl and her black hair is tied in a short tail on top of her head. However, thanks to Jeremy's upgrades at the start of Season 4, her Lyoko battlesuit has become considerably more streamlined; a dark burgundy catsuit with magenta accents that highlight the tops of her legs and her high-heeled black boots are replaced with matching magenta sneakers. She now wears shoulder pads, a white vambrace, two pill-like capsules above her eyebrows, the yellow bow on her back has been simplified to look more like a pack, and her hair has changed to look exactly like it does on Earth.

Abilities and Equipment

  • Weapons:

    • Fans - At the time of her first virtualisation on Lyoko, Yumi had one fan to fight with. Since episode 30 “A Great Day”, she has had two, also doubling her efficiency in combat. Her pair of weapons allows her to deal effective attacks. They move in a circular manner, which makes dodging them very hard for land-based monsters. Yumi has not yet used her fans as a close-ranged weapon, but her throws can decimate flying creatures as well as ones on the ground.

  • Abilities - The aforementioned weapons go hand-in-hand with Yumi's telekinesis. The two weapons are always thrown with a large amount of force, allowing them to slice through several monsters before always returning to Yumi like boomerangs (“XANA Awakens”). However, monster laser fire can knock the deadly razors off course, as Tarantulas have often proved (episode 27 “New Order”). This sheds light on Yumi's weapons' major fault: when they go out of her control, or when monsters send them flying further away from her, Yumi finds herself unarmed and must quickly recover her projectiles. In critical situations, Yumi sometimes makes it through by combining her fan throws with her power of telekinesis, in order to correct a bad throw (episode 31 “Mister Pück”). However, when she confronts William, telekinesis is often insufficient for duping the XANA Warrior. The situation is worse still if he seizes her twin weapons, because he can then disintegrate them (episode 78 “Lab Rat”). Also, Yumi can use her fans as defensive weapons, all while still having a lot of freedom of movement. They allow her to protect herself from laser fire, by intercepting the shots before they reach their target. Unfortunately, they aren't sufficient for deflecting Megatank lasers or William's sword; in these cases Yumi must rely on her agility.

  • Yumi's strength comes from a combination of all her abilities. While Ulrich counts on his sabre's brute force and speed, Odd focuses on his arrows and his agility. Yumi combines all her qualities and always puts her assets to good use. She is therefore the first one to pose a serious challenge to William in episode 68 “Opening Act” and defeat him in solo combat in episode 74 “I'd Rather Not Talk About It”.

Personality

Yumi is calm and collected, preferring to get acquainted with people before opening up to them. She comes across as cold from a distance, but once trust is established she assumes a limitless fidelity towards the people whom she likes. She is generous and understanding of people's emotions and personalities, and tries her best to reassure them of her commitment, care and trust. Her personality was primarily inspired by series co-creater Tania Palumbo. Aspects were also said to be taken from Sophie Decroisette, specifically her being serious and reserved.

The easiest way to hurt Yumi is to betray that trust. Her patience only goes so far, and Yumi has often lashed out at people only to deeply regret it later on. This extends throughout major aspects of her life, including the less-than-stable nature of her parents' marriage, the wild antics of her younger brother, and above all the stagnant state of the relationship between herself and Ulrich. Yumi often finds herself struggling to tolerate indecisiveness or uncertainty, which often leads to conflict between herself and the rest of the Lyoko Warriors (as seen in episodes such as The Secret or Echoes), however her faith in her friends always wins out in the end.

Yumi is fully committed, both to the fight against X.A.N.A. and to her schoolwork and sports. She is an adept athlete, focuses heavily on her studies and takes martial arts, the latter of which she does despite her parents calling it 'weird.' She is also very popular at school (particularly with the boys) but generally finds it to be either irritating or irrelevant.

It is stated at various points that Yumi is proud of her Japanese heritage, and enjoys sharing aspects of it, such as in The Girl of the Dreams when she presents at the end of her class report an authentic suit of samurai armor that has belonged to her family for hundreds of years. In the Code Lyoko Evolution episodes SuspicionsFriday the 13th and Intrusion, Yumi is also shown to be interested in charity and environmental projects.
